A week at Nine Coliving
What does a week at Nine actually look like?
The truth is, no two weeks are the same. There are a few things that give the week some structure; yoga, our community meeting and two community meals — but everything else depends on the people staying at Nine and what they feel like doing.
Some weeks have lots of activities and trips. Other weeks are quieter. And many of the plans happen spontaneously: someone suggests a hike, another person wants to visit somewhere on the island, or a few people decide to go out together.
So instead of showing you an idealised schedule, we picked one real week from our blackboard.
Here’s what was happening at Nine that week.
Monday — Starting the week together
Monday starts with yoga at 12:00, followed by lunch at 13:00, our first community meal of the week.
We have two community meals every week. They’re a moment to stop working, sit down together and catch up with everyone in the house.
At 19:30, we have our weekly community meeting. This is where we go through anything happening in the house and look at plans for the week ahead.
It’s also a good moment for guests to suggest their own plans. If someone wants to hike, visit a beach, organise a dinner or explore somewhere on the island, they can add it to the blackboard and see who wants to join.
By the end of the meeting, the week usually has a few more things on it than it did at the beginning.
Tuesday — Yoga, work and a game of Among Us
Tuesday starts with yoga at 9:00.
After that, most people get on with their day. Nine is a coliving, which means people are working online, so not every hour is filled with activities. During the day, you'll usually find people working from different spots around the house, taking calls or focus in the workspace.
Later, one of our hosts organised a game of Among Us for the house. Our hosts also organise activities during the week, and this time it was a game that anyone who felt like joining could jump into.
This Tuesday, we're also welcoming Sergio and saying goodbye to Lola.
With guests arriving and leaving on different days, the group changes throughout the week. New people arrive, others leave, and the mix of people in the house keeps changing.
Wednesday — Family Dinner
Wednesday there is yoga at 12:00 and in the evening we have our second community meal of the week: Family Dinner.
Family Dinner happens every Wednesday and each week one of our guests volunteers to be the head chef for the meal.
Usually, there’s a theme. It might be a type of cuisine, a dish from someone's home country or, as happened this week, a particular ingredient.
This week's theme was carrots.
So the challenge was to prepare a dinner around carrots, while everyone comes and helps out.
The theme and the guest cooking change every week, so Family Dinner is always a little different.
Thursday — A trip to a local beach
Thursday is a good example of how plans at Nine often come together.
This week, Josh organised a trip to a local beach and anyone who wanted to join could come along.
A lot of activities at Nine happen this way. Someone already wants to do something and puts it on the Slack channel to see who else is interested. It doesn’t have to be something organised by Nine. Guests are encouraged to make their own plans and invite others along.
Thursday is also a goodbye day, as Anna and Kali are leaving Nine.
Later in the evening, there’s yoga at 21:00 for those who are around.
Friday — Hiking and a night out
Friday there is again yoga at 12:00, and this week Gabby has organised a hike.
Hiking is one of the activities that comes up quite often at Nine. We're surrounded by plenty of options in the north of Tenerife, so it’s easy for someone to suggest a route and find a few other people who want to come along.
In the evening, there’s a goodbye night out.
Several people are leaving over the weekend, so a group has decided to go out together before everyone heads in different directions.
Nothing too organised, just another plan that made its way onto the blackboard.
The Weekend — Farmers' Market, arrivals and goodbyes
The weekend has a bit less structure, which leaves plenty of room to explore Tenerife or make plans with other people in the house.
This Saturday starts with a visit to the Farmers' Market. It’s an easy weekend activity and a chance to pick up local fruit, vegetables and other ingredients a short walk from the house.
It’s also a busy weekend for arrivals and departures. On Saturday, we’re saying goodbye to Adam, Gabby and Josh and welcoming Balazs. On Sunday, Kelly, Elle and Luc arrive, while Truit, Jules and Giorgia leave.
Apart from that, there isn't much planned on the blackboard and that's quite normal.
The weekend can be for going to the beach, surfing, exploring the island, having a long breakfast, catching up on some work or simply seeing what plans come up during the day.
Then, before you know it, it's Monday and the blackboard starts filling up again.
So, is every week at Nine like this?
Definitely not.
This is simply one example of a real week at Nine.
Some parts stay fairly consistent. We have yoga throughout the week, a community meeting, Monday community lunch and our Wednesday Family Dinner where guests all cook together.
The rest changes constantly.
Some activities are organised by our hosts, while others come directly from guests. Someone might suggest a hike, another person might organise a day at Siam Park, or a host might get everyone together for a game of Among Us.
The next week could have surfing, a barbecue, a beach afternoon, a trip to Teide or very little planned at all.
We provide some structure, but we don't create a full programme for our guests. A lot of what ends up on the blackboard comes from the people living in the house.
See something you like? Join. Have another idea? Put it on the board. Need a quiet week to work? That's fine too.
By the following Monday, parts of the board will be wiped clean, there will be some new faces in the house, and the schedule will start filling up again.
Another week at Nine… and probably a completely different one.
