The Candelaria Pilgrimage

Is one of the most captivating cultural and spiritual experiences in the Canary Islands, transforming the night of August 14th into a magical, lantern-lit sea of ​​people. Tens of thousands of people of all ages walk/hike under the stars along ancient historical paths and mountain trails from all corners of Tenerife, sharing laughter, song, and food in a unique atmosphere of Canarian camaraderie. The pilgrimage route from La Orotava to Candelaria is a demanding mountain trek of over 25 kilometers, formally beginning on the Aguamansa - La Crucita section (PR-TF 35.4). The hike starts from the La Caldera recreation area, tackling a challenging 4.5-kilometer ascent to the La Crucita viewpoint on the island's summit. From there, it begins the long descent down the southeast slope to the Basilica of Candelaria. Due to the significant elevation gain and varied terrain, it requires excellent physical fitness, warm clothing for the summit, technical mountain footwear, and prior safety planning through official platforms such as Tenerife On.
